Next Saturday, Oct 19, at the Diamondhead Educational Center in Burnsville, anyone woh would like to may participate in a chess tournament against children your own age from across the Twin Cities. It lasts from about 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. See SchoolChess.com to register. I plan to be there.

 Week 1 We learned rules of castling and the history behind the en passant move. We also learned about ratings. Beginners start at 100. Those who know how to play start at 200. Those who have been in one of my classes will start where they were last session. Ways to earn rating points: Gain 5 points each time you come to chess club. Gain points from worksheets - typically 2 points per problem solved, up to 18 points. Successfully demonstrating a skill mastered for 10 to 20 points. Winning a game against a higher rated player is worth 16 to 32 points. Winning a game against a lower rated player is worth 1 to 15 points. Drawing against a stronger player is worth 0 to 15 points. Losing a game will cost you anywhere from 1 to 32 points. Drawing against a lower rated player will cost you from 1 ti 16 points.
