Beginners: We went over the solutions to the pin problems

Advanced:  We went over the idea of deflection and discussed the solutions to the worksheet problems.

TOURNAMENTS

Next tournament is Oct 16 at the Burnsville Diamondhead Educational Center. For more information and to register go to www.schoolchess.org. If you go, expect to play five games in the 3rd through 5th section or four games if you are in 6th through 8th grade. Each round you will play against someone with the same, or similar record. Example: if you lose your first two games, in round 3 you will play someone who also lost their first two games.

  LESSON We learned how to stop a pawn from queening (K vs K & P)   1. Get your king in the "safety zone"   2. When you have to leave the "safety zone" step into the square of opposition. We learned how to queen a pawn (K and P vs K)   1. Get your king in front of your pawn   2. Move your king into the square of opposition   3. Get your King to the 6th rank. If you can achieve 2 of the three goals listed above, you can queen your pawn, If you advance your pawn to the 7th rank with check, it will result in a stalemate.  Week 1 We learned rules of castling and the history behind the en passant move. We also learned about ratings. Beginners start at 100. Those who know how to play start at 200. Those who have been in one of my classes will start where they were last session. Ways to earn rating points: Gain 5 points each time you come to chess club. Gain points from worksheets - typically 2 points per problem solved, up to 18 points. Successfully demonstrating a skill mastered for 10 to 20 points. Winning a game against a higher rated player is worth 16 to 32 points. Winning a game against a lower rated player is worth 1 to 15 points. Drawing against a stronger player is worth 0 to 15 points. Losing a game will cost you anywhere from 1 to 32 points. Drawing against a lower rated player will cost you from 1 ti 16 points.
